  • The project HyLights was launched by the European Commission (EC) in January 2006 as part of the European hydrogen and fuel cells strategy. Its specific goal is to assist the EC and industry in the planning of the next large-scale demonstration project phase. Support will be given by specific advice on technical, project management, financing and procedural issues and the development of specific support tools, putting a clear focus on hydrogen for transport.
HyLights has progressed on the following tasks:
Assessment report and online database on concluded/ongoing demonstration projects,
provision of strategic material on European regions’ hydrogen and fuel cell programs as online database,
development of an assessment tool for the eligibility of European regions to participate in future large-scale demonstration projects,
provision of a monitoring and assessment framework handbook to control the performance of future demonstration projects at project and program level,
report on the identification of gaps and required performance levels of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies (vehicles and refuelling infrastructure) in future demonstration projects,
report on legal and project management issues for future demonstration projects,
tool-based assessment of the required policy support structures and levels for the demonstration and early market phase and
develop a brand and platform for the European project family „Hydrogen for Transport“ (H2moves.eu).
In this endeavour HyLights has identified the specific relevance of the European regions in providing the first markets for hydrogen and fuel cell vehicles and infrastructure, involving industry at regional level.
