Overview of Hydrogen Production through Iodine Sulfur Process at INET
As an important application of high temperature heat generated by high temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR), R&D on the hydrogen production through the thermochemical iodine sulfur water splitting cycle (IS process) has been carring out since 2005 at the institute of nuclear and new energy technology (INET) of Tsinghua University. Studies on Bunsen reaction, separation and purification of two acids formed in Bunsen reaction, HI acid decomposition, concentration of HI acid by electro-electrodialysis, H2SO4 decomposition and catalysts for the decomposition of HI acid, as well as sulfuric acid, were carried out. Based on the knowledge acquired through the studies on separated section, a closed loop apparatus with the designed hydrogen generation rate of 10NL/h was established, and the closed cycle test will be carried out soon. In addition, the R&D plan on IS process is presented in this paper.
