Proton Conductivities of Low Temperature Sinterable Yb-Doped BaZrO3
Low temperature sintering studies for Yb-doped BaZrO3 were performed. Dense Yb-doped BaZrO3 sintered bodies having the densities over than 95% could be obtained when 1~2 mol% CuO were added and then they were sintered at 1500oC for 10 hours. The proton conductivity of thus-obtained 20 mol% Yb-doped BaZrO3 was 8.9×10-3 (S/cm)K at 600oC under the wet nitrogen atmosphere, which is about two orders of magnitude larger than that of the 10 mol% Yb-doped BaZrO3 sintered at 1500oC for 20 hours without CuO addition. Also, the proton conductivities of thus-obtained Yb-doped BaZrO3 were significantly higher than those of the Y-doped BaZrO3 which were sintered at 1500oC for 10 hours with the 1~2 mol% CuO addition. These results are to be discussed from the viewpoint of defect chemistry and microstructure evolution.
