Ergon Energy's Trial of Fuel Cell Technology

  • Jennifer Gannon, Network Generation - Ergon Energy, Australia
  • Ergon Energy is a state government-owned electricity distributor and retailer whose territory encompasses 97 per cent of the state of Queensland. Ergon Energy has identified distributed generation as one of the ways in which we can maintain quality power supply to our customers in a sustainable manner. Ergon Energy selected hydrogen fuel cell technology to demonstrate the concept of distributor owned, residential sized generation for network support. This paper provides an overview of Ergon Energy's fuel cell trial application, connecting a Plug Power GenCore fuel cell through an inverter to supply directly onto the power network. The paper also discusses technology selection and procurement; regulatory issues for using fuel cells and hydrogen in Queensland; fuelling and grid connection of the fuel cell; Ergon Energy's experience with using a fuel cell for grid support; and Ergon Energy's view of the potential role of fuel cells as a future stationary energy option in Australia.
