National Hydrogen Energy Road Map: Pathway to the Transition to the Hydrogen Energy Economy in India

  • Dr. S Chopra, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy
  • Hydrogen energy is poised to become a major component in the energy mix in India in coming decades for meeting the growing needs for the country's economy while protecting the environment. A National Hydrogen Energy Road Map has been prepared in India which provides the pathway which would lead to the phased introduction of hydrogen energy in the country, accelerate commercialization efforts and facilitate the wide spread introduction of hydrogen as an energy carrier. The Road Map will lead to the implementation of the National Hydrogen Energy Programme through policies, legislation, financing and support infrastructure along with research, development and demonstration. The Road Map is based on a systems approach for developing and commercializing hydrogen energy technologies through public private partnerships. The Road Map has set the target of one thousand MW of power generation capacity based on hydrogen energy and one million vehicles based on hydrogen energy by the year 2020. The achievements of these targets will require actions at different levels for the various components of the hydrogen energy system which have been identified in the Road Map. A focus area of the Road Map is capacity building, including the setting up of a National Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Centre. This presentation would discuss the main features of the National Hydrogen Energy Road Map for India, achievements so far, and the tasks ahead for bringing about the transition to the new hydrogen energy economy in India.
