An Evaluation of Integrated Hydrogen Systems: Overview of IEA Hydrogen Task 18
Under the auspices of the International Energy Agency’s Hydrogen Implementing Agreement, a working group has been evaluating and comparing experiences with integrated hydrogen demonstration systems. This paper presents an overview of Task 18 – Evaluation of Integrated Hydrogen Systems – which has been underway since January 2004. There are currently fourteen member countries of Task 18. Three subtasks undertake the following activities:
Subtask A: Information Base Development
Subtask B: Modeling and Analysis of Integrated Demonstration Systems
Subtask C: Synthesis and Learning
In Subtask A, more than 250 national documents have been summarized and archived in a database, which is public at www.port-h2.com/IEA-Annex-18/. This information base also includes twenty-four selected IEA Case Studies providing a wealth of information on hydrogen experiences. Other information bases include national projects and national organizations. In Subtask B, seven demonstration systems in seven different countries have been evaluated through detailed modeling and documentation, and another seven evaluations are underway. These include both renewable-based vehicle refueling stations and electric power systems. Permitting and safety experiences have also been documented. In Subtask C our goal is to find best practices, trends, and general lessons learned with respect to realization and operation of integrated hydrogen systems. Both Subtask A and B provide input into this work. In addition to those already completed, ten more Case Studies are in preparation.
