An Innovative On Demand Hydrogen Generator for Backup and Portable Power Applications
NRC Institute for Fuel Cell Innovation(NRC-IFCI), in collaboration with a Vancouver company, has developed an innovative proprietary technology to generate high purity, PEM Fuel Cell grade hydrogen truely ‘on demand’ from water through electrochemical reactions with consumable electrodes. Both anode and cathode react with water to produce hydrogen only when they are electrically connected through an external switch, making it a simple, passive and truly “On Demand” hydrogen generator. This generator has been integrated with PEM fuel cells to generate power and is presently under development for backup/portable and micro fuel cell applications. This paper will present performance results for this unique hydrogen generator, called “Hydrogen Power On Demand (H2POD)”, and its integration with fuel cells.
